5/2 Recap: Byron nets game winner

Locked in a 2-2 tie entering the third period, Sabres property Paul Byron notched the game winning goal for Gatineau, lifting les Olympiques to a 6-2 win over Rouyn-Noranda in the opening frame of the QMJHL Finals. The power play winner was Byron's 16th of the playoffs. He accumulated five shots on goal in the win, while also contributing a team-best four blocks. The two clubs will battle again this evening for game two.

So, Kris -- when do the Sabres project to bringing this kid in? What's the timeline? I think it's clear that they need to give him a shot at the very least.

Barring an amazing training camp performance, it's all but guaranteed he goes back to Gatineau next season. The Sabres will need to see how Byron reacts when it's "his team". He has shown that he can create offense in the Q as an independent entity. I think his story becomes more complete once he shows that he can do it without Claude Giroux on the roster. I'm not suggesting that A succeeds because of B, but continuing on next season will better his chances of getting a quality look against bigger, stronger competition in 2009-10. Byron just turned 19 last week, so let's figure on one more season of cheeseburgers and milkshakes on those long Q bus rides. I'll be adding a stat column on his sheet next season - G A PTS LBS.
