Gogulla grounded out of gate

Philip Gogulla and the Cologne Sharks kicked off their DEL regular season last week with a pair of losses. On Thursday, the 6'2 forward opened by going pointless with 12 PIM in a 2-1 loss to Berlin. Gogulla (-1) inflated his stat line by being whistled for abuse of officials and a ten minute misconduct in the game's final seconds. The 21-year old German finished last season with just 30 PIM in 51 games. The Sharks returned to the ice on Sunday, falling short in a 2-0 loss to the DEG Metro Stars. Gogulla responded with team-high six shots on goal, but none could beat a sharp Jamie Storr en route to his 44-save shutout. The Sharks and Metro Stars will face each other again on Tuesday. In Sunday preseason play, Drew Schiestel had a goal for Niagara in their 4-2 defeat of Oshawa. The IceDogs will host Erie (Thursday) and Saginaw (Saturday) before turning the defenseman loose for Sabres camp. Also in the OHL, Nick Crawford skated in Saginaw's 2-2 tie with the Soo Greyhounds. QMJHL sniper Paul Byron (+1, 4 PIM) set-up the game-tying goal then notched the shootout clincher in Gatineau's 5-4 win over Montreal. T.J. Brennan (-2) had an assist and a game-best eight shots on goal for the Junior, while Luke Adam sat the game out. In Charlottetown, Jordon Southorn knocked in an empty-netter as the Rocket shot past Cape Breton, 4-1. In Saturday action out west, defenseman Tyler Myers suited up in Kelowna's 4-2 shootout win over Vancouver. Despite being left off the score sheet, the 6'7 glider displayed his skating and puck lugging skills throughout. He was also active physically, earning his first elbowing minor of the year (likely due to his height). At the IceBreaker Tournament in Saskatoon, Medicine Hat enjoyed a 10-2 victory over the Blades on Saturday before closing with a 5-3 loss to Swift Current. It appears that Tyler Ennis did not play in either game for the Tigers, but information is limited.
