2/3 Recap: Myers continues shutdown ways

Written By Kris Baker on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 | 2/04/2009

The game's #2 star, Tyler Myers had an assist and received his fifth fighting major of the season as Kelowna downed Kamloops, 6-1. Myers' scuffle came after he boarded a Blazers forward as part of a chippy third period. The 6'7 defenseman has five goals and 24 assists this season, and a remarkable +17 rating after finishing -16 in 2007-08. Jamie Benn (DAL) had a hat trick to lead the Rockets.

Would you put money on Myers making the team next year?

I want him here soon. I love that he seems to like the fighting majors now. :D

I think it's possible that his play in camp could allow him to linger as an intriguing opening night candidate, but he can't realistically be in the full-year blueprint for next season just yet. Anything can happen, but things would need change if he were to ever stick. Rivet, Tallinder, Lydman, Weber, Sekera (RFA), Paetsch, Butler are under contract. Re-signing Spacek is on the table if Butler/Weber need to start in the A again. Numminen out.

That would put at least Gragnani, Schiestel, Brennan, Kostka (and maybe one of Funk/Card as AHL depth RFA signings) in Portland. A guy like Matt Generous could play his way into Portland. Persson could realistically stay another year in Sweden, but it's too early.

Myers is still nothing more than an emergency guy for the time being. Let's see if he can backbone a Memorial Cup blueline first.

as someone who sees him play every game in Kelowna, he is definately not ready for the NHL!! He has almost got worse over the course of the season. The beginning of the season he showed tremendous improvement over the previous year but he has not continued to improve that much throughout the season. I see him spending next year in Kelowna as well JMHO

What area is he not improving in... his +/- is still going up, his point total isn't going up as rapidly but he's increased his physical game instead. I think the next thing he needs to focus on is packing on some pounds and make sure he keeps working on his bado him some good lance. Playing another year in the W would and help him become the shutdown defenseman we want him to be. Bakes, any opinion on whether he skips the AHL when we sign him and makes the team? I'm all for trading Tallinder now but if we don't I'm guessing Myers will be his replacement after next season, and we keep Spacho for another 1 or 2 yrs depending on trades.
