11/29 Recap: Adam pops off as Eagles hang ten

Luke Adam scored a hat trick and added an assist on Sunday as Cape Breton smoked Drummondville, 10-2. Adam (+4) also posted five shots on goal and won 11 of his 13 faceoffs to earn the game’s #1 star and help the Eagles shake off Friday's brutal shutout loss to Bathurst. The four-point effort ups the pivot's season totals to 19 goals and 25 assists through 29 games – good for third overall among QMJHL scorers.

Also from the Q, Maxime Legault scored the game-tying goal as Shawinigan won a 3-2 shootout decision over Gatineau. The power play tally was Legault’s seventh goal of the season.

In OHL play, Marcus Foligno saw his two-game goal streak snapped in Sudbury's 3-1 loss to Kitchener.

In the lone Sunday college contest, Alex Biega was even with a shot on goal as Harvard was dumped by Dartmouth, 6-2.

11/28 Recap: McNabb leads way; Marcus earns marks

Brayden McNabb scored the game-tying and game winning goals on Saturday to lead Kootenay past Kelowna, 4-2. The power play goals were the fifth and sixth of the season for the rugged WHL defender. The game's #1 star, McNabb's evening was rounded out by 23 PIM, the bulk of which coming from a third period scrap and misconduct after Kelowna's Curt Gogul came in high on blueline partner James Martin.

In the OHL, Marcus Foligno scored a goal for the second straight game as Sudbury lost in a Saturday night shootout to Barrie, 4-3. Foligno lit the lamp on the power play at 9:05 of the third period to force the extra session. Nick Crawford was +1 for the winners.

Somehow not included in Friday's recap was Foligno's slumpbusting effort on that saw him net his second goal of the year (and first in 22 games) in the Wolves 4-2 loss to Owen Sound. The 18-year old wasted little time getting reacquainted with the twine, scoring at the 1:56 mark of the opening period.

In the QMJHL, Maxime Legault scored on the power play in the game's final minute to give Shawinigan a 4-3 win over Moncton. The 20-year old also earned an assist to up his season totals six goals and six assists through his first 12 games.

Jordon Southorn was even through a period and a half before earning a fighting major and game misconduct as PEI defeated Lewiston, 6-4. The win was the fifth straight for the Rocket.

In the NCAA, North Dakota's Brad Eidsness made 21 saves while Connor Knapp stopped 19 shots for Miami as the #3 Sioux and #1 RedHawks played to an exciting 5-5 tie at the Subway Holiday Classic. Knapp and the Redhawks survived a four-goal onslaught in the second period to score a pair in the third and earn the tie. Corey Fienhage was -1 for the Sioux.

All ten goals against involving the Sabres goaltending prospects:

In the CCHA, Nick Eno made 33 saves as Bowling Green battled to a 4-4 tie with Notre Dame. Three of the Irish goals came on the power play.

Corey Tropp was held without a point as Michigan State lost to Minnesota, 2-1.

Justin Jokinen was again a scratch as Minnesota State defeated Michigan Tech, 3-2.

In the USHL, Mark Adams did not play in Chicago's 3-2 loss to Green Bay.

11/27 Recap: Lagacé gets hatty; Crawford cruising as Colt

Jacob Lagacé notched his second hat trick of the season on Friday as Chicoutimi lost to Rimouski, 7-4. The three-goal output, which included two at even strength and one shorthanded, extends Lagacé's point streak to nine games (9+10), while improving his season numbers to 19 goals and 18 assists in 23 games.

In the NCAA, Corey Fienhage earned his first point of the year and finished a game-high +3 as host #4 North Dakota defeated Ohio State, 4-1, at the Subway Holiday Classic in Grand Forks. Playing on the third pair, Fienhage picked up an assist when he made a nice keep at the blueline and used good vision on a pass to Darcy Zajac for the Sioux's first goal. Brad Eidsness made 22 saves to help North Dakota improve to 8-4-1.

Game highlights:

In the early game at Grand Forks, Connor Knapp watched as #1 Miami was upset by #6 Bemidji State, 3-2. The sophomore is expected to get the nod opposite Eidsness when the RedHawks take on North Dakota on Saturday.

In East Lansing, Corey Tropp scored his 10th goal of the year and added an assist as #8 Michigan State got throttled by #15Wisconsin, 7-3, as part of the College Hockey Showcase. The junior has now a career-high 19 points through the first 15 games of the Spartans' schedule.

Brayden McNabb scored a goal and an assist in his return to the Kootenay lineup as the Ice scored five third period goals to earn a 6-5 shootout win over Kamloops. McNabb, who garnered an assist in Team WHL's Subway Super Series win on Thursday, missed the previous eight games with a knee injury.

In the OHL, Nick Crawford posted three assists as Barrie downed Mississauga, 5-2. Crawford, who finished the night +3, has one goal, nine assists, and a +10 in seven games since being traded to the Colts.

Zack Kassian was held without a point as Peterborough dropped a 3-2 shootout to league stud, Windsor.

Finishing the QMJHL wrap, Luke Adam was -2 in Cape Breton's 3-0 loss to Bathurst. With the Eagles struggling and lacking intensity, the generally mild-mannered Adam displayed his unhappiness on the bench during the chippy contest, at one point throwing his stick in disgust.

Jordon Southorn was +1 as PEI defeated Lewiston, 6-4.

Elsewhere in the NCAA, Nick Eno made 31 saves as Bowling Green was defeated by Notre Dame, 2-1 in overtime.

Drew MacKenzie was scratched as #18 Vermont edged Northeastern, 3-2. Catamounts coaching staff Kevin Sneddon was looking to send a message after Tuesday's 6-2 loss to Massachusetts, and barring injury/illnes, it appears that the sophomore defenseman was one of the examples being made.

Justin Jokinen was also a scratch in Minnesota State's 5-2 win over Michigan Tech.

In the USHL, Mark Adams did not play in Chicago's 4-2 win over Team USA. The 6'2 defenseman registered one shot on goal in the Steel's 2-1 overtime loss to Green Bay on Wednesday.

11/24 Recap: Misfiring Marcus mired in months of misery

Marcus Foligno was even with a roughing minor on Tuesday as Sudbury lost to Sault Ste. Marie, 3-2 in OT. The defeat marked the 22nd straight game without a goal for the 6'3 grinder, a stretch dating back two months to September 26th. Granted the Sabres drafted hard-working bloodlines and not offesnive prowess when selecting Foligno, but the current drought dwarfs previous dry spells of 11 and 13 games in his 17-year old season, and will continue to be a lingering concern until things start translating to the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, Alex Biega was +1 with an assist on Tuesday as Harvard fell to Boston University in overtime, 6-5. In the third period, Biega fed a long outlet pass to Connor Morrison who proceded to bury his third of four goals on the evening to put the Crismon ahead 4-3 at the time. The senior captain has points in three of his last four games. Harvard will host Dartmouth on Sunday.

In Hockey East, Drew MacKenzie finished -1 as #18 Vermont dropped to 4-5-1 on the year with a 6-2 loss to #9 Massachusetts. James Marcou had five assists and Casey Wellman netted a hat trick for the Minutemen, while David Pacan scored his first career goal for the losing Catamounts. Vermont will travel to Northeastern on Friday.

Kassian scores, McNabb returns as Canada pares list

Zack Kassian scored a power play goal with 1:36 left to play on Monday as Team OHL defeated Team Russia 5-2 in Game #4 of the Subway SuperSeries. The play developed when Nick Crawford flipped a shot to the front of the cage where a waiting Kassian tipped the puck past tired Russian netminder,  Alexander Zalivan (42 saves). The assist was Crawford's only point of the night.

2010 stud Taylor Hall scored the game winning goal at 15:56 of the second period when he danced around a hit just inside the blueline to put the OHL ahead 3-0. The win gives the CHL a 4-0 record as the series moves to the WHL for the final two games on Wednesday and Thursday.

It has been confirmed that Kootenay defenceman Brayden McNabb will be in the WHL lineup when the puck drops for Wednesday's Game #5. McNabb, 18, hasn't played since injuring his knee on November 1st, but will jump at the chance for a final audition before Hockey Canada announces their World Junior Selection Camp roster next week.

McNabb, 18, was sixth in WHL scoring for defensemen with three goals and 13 assists in 18 games played before getting hurt. In a year when Canada may take size over speed, the 6'4 lefty joins 6'6 Brett Ponich, 6'5 Jared Cowan, and 6'4 Colten Teubert on a sturdy Dub blueline.

Luke Adam previously made his case for inclusion at Canada's final cutdown with five points, including two goals and two assists in Game #2,  as the QMJHL kicked the series off with a pair of victories. Darkhorse candidate Jacob Lagacé joined Adam on a line for Game #2, netting goal and three assists in the 8-3 win.

EDIT: Brayden McNabb is scheduled to play in Game #6 on Friday, not Game #5 as mentioned above.

11/22 Recap: Lagacé liking November

Jacob Lagacé continued his cruise through the QMJHL schedule on Sunday with a goal and two assists, but Chicoutimi squandered a three-goal lead in an exciting 6-5 OT loss to PEI. The 5'11 Lagacé has collected six goals and 10 assists while pointing in all eight November games for the Sagueneens (11-9-2-4). The game featured six goals in the final 20-minutes of regulation, with Matthew Hobbs scoring the overtime winner with just .1 seconds remaining on the clock. Jordon Southorn was +1 for the Rocket.

In Moncton, Luke Adam assisted on a goal just :20 into the game as Cape Breton held off the Wildcats, 3-2. Tied for third overall in QMJHL scoring with 37 points (15+22), the big pivot has hit the sheet in 22 of 26 games this season.

In a CCHA tilt, Corey Tropp was -3 as #6 Michigan State lost to Notre Dame, 4-1. The first-place Spartans will host WCHA programs Wisconsin and Minnesota next weekend.

11/21 Recap: Kassian leads; Lagacé stays warm

Zack Kassian scored a shorthanded goal and assisted on the game winner on Saturday as Peterborough edged Niagara, 3-2. With his team trailing 2-1 after 40-minutes, the Petes captain scored at 5:02 of the third period to tie the game, shift momentum, and help earn the game's #1 star honors. With the two-point night, Kassian notched back-to-back multi-point efforts for the first time this season.

Jacob Lagacé extended his point streak to seven games by scoring a goal in Chicoutimi's 3-2 loss to PEI. The goal was Lagacé's 15th of the season, and 11th at even strength. Rocket defenseman Jordon Southorn was +2 with an assist and a fighting major in the win. The 6'2 Southorn took five after initiating with Sags forward Rock Régimbald, whose knee-on-knee hit in the third period left Rocket scorer Benjamin Casavant hobbling to the locker room.

Luke Adam posted a pair of assists as Cape Breton came up short in a 4-3 shootout loss to Bathurst. Adam has been a dominant offensive force for the Screaming Eagles with 36 points in 25 games, but he continues to struggle in shootouts with an 0/8 mark over his four junior seasons. The Eagles as a whole are not fans of the breakway session as evidenced by their 0/17 season number.

Also from the QMJHL, Maxime Legault assisted on the game winning goal as Shawinigan bested Montreal, 3-1.

In the OHL, Nick Crawford was -2 with an assist as Barrie defeated Saginaw, 4-2. 2009 eligible Ivan Telegin (6'3, 185 lbs.) scored his 18th goal of the year for the Spirit.

Marcus Foligno finished -1 as Sudbury was outclassed by Mississauga-St. Mike's, 5-1. The gritty wing earned a late game misconduct after trying to fight Majors' dman Cameron Gaunce as part of a chippy third period. The Majors (19-4-2) outshot the Wolves (9-14-0-2) by a 54-20 margin.

In the NCAA, Brad Eidsness made 29 saves but #2 North Dakota coughed up an early two-goal lead in a 3-2 loss at #3 Denver. Eidsness, who was very strong in the weekend losses. allowed three power play goals in the second period, including two off the stick of former AJHL rival, Joe Colborne. Corey Fienhage was steady defensively in his third straight game for the Sioux while becoming more comfortable moving the puck.

Connor Knapp made 29 saves as #1 Miami tied Western Michigan, 1-1. The goal against came after a turnover down low caused a Bronco forward to shovel the puck past the sophomore netminder. With Knapp's last two Saturdays resulting in 1-1 ties, SabresProspects is thinking the same could hold true next week when the Redhawks meet up with Brad Eidsness and current #2 North Dakota at the Subway Holiday Classic in Grand Forks.

In other CCHA action, Nick Eno made 26 saves as Bowling Green's winning streak was halted at one with a 4-1 loss to #16 Michigan. A tip-in and a clean wrister from the slot gave the Wolverines a two-goal lead in the first 12 minutes. Moments later a turnover from in deep upped UM's advantage to 3-1, and they never loooked back. The loss drops Eno's record to 2-4 on the year.

In the ECAC, Alex Biega (-1) uncorked eight shots on goal as Harvard played to a 2-2 tie with Clarkson. The Crimson held a 2-0 lead late into the third before surrendering two goals :32 apart in the 56th minute.

Justin Jokinen was -1 as Minnesota State lost at Alaska-Anchorage, 4-1. Jokinen should continue to see steady playing time with junior forward Andrew Sackrison suffering a broken leg in Friday's 8-3 win.

In the USHL, Mark Adams did not play in Chicago's 4-0 shutout loss to Indiana.

Brayden McNabb did not take the ice for Kootenay's game with Swift Current, which makes his projected return set for next Friday (and his inclusion in the Subway Superseries still questionable).

Paul Byron, Nathan Gerbe, and Philip Gogulla added assists for the Pirates, while J.P. Lamoureux stopped 23 shots to secure the club's third straight win. The former Hobey Baker finalist started four games in five nights ahead of Jhonas Enroth, finishing the stretch 3-1.

McNabb mended?

Sources out of Cranbrook suggest that 2009 third round pick Brayden McNabb could be set for a return to the Kootenay blueline as early as Saturday night's contest at Swift Current.

The 6'4, 210-pound McNabb has missed seven games while recovering from a left knee injury suffered on November 1st. Originally thought to be out four-six weeks, McNabb's three-week recovery could see him skate for Team WHL in the final leg of the Subway Super Series next week and better his shot for a Team Canada roster spot for the upcoming World Junior Championships.

11/18-20 Recap: Six-pack for Lagacé, Kassian helps thrice

Jacob Lagacé scored his 14th goal of the year on Friday as Chicoutimi lost to Bathurst in a shootout, 5-4. Tied for 9th in QMJHL scoring, the 5'11 forward misfired as the first Sags shooter in the deciding frame. Lagacé now has 14+ goals and 16 assists in 20 games this season, including points in six straight game since missing a week from a sketchy hit to the head by Quebec's Danick Paquette (ATL).

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, Maxime Legault scored his sixth goal of the year as Shawinigan spanked Quebec, 6-1.

Jordon Southorn was +1 in PEI's 5-4 loss to Moncton. 2009 eligible Brandon Gormley (6'2, 190 lbs.) earned an assist for the Wildcats.

In OHL play, Zack Kassian collected three assists, including help on the overtime game winner, as Peterborough won a 4-3 battle with Oshawa. The output was the first three-point effort of the season (16 games) for the 6'3 banger.

Nick Crawford assisted on the overtime game winner as Barrie got past Brampton, 3-2. The win was the tenth in a row for the red hot Colts, with Crawford scoring a goal and four assists in four games since his arrival from the Spirit.

Marcus Foligno was even as Sudbury carried the pace in a 3-0 shutout of Saginaw. The 9-13-0-2 Wolves will face Mississauga on Saturday. They haven't beaten the Majors since January 2006.

In Friday NCAA play, Nick Eno made 29 saves as Bowling Green scored three third period goals to surprise sputtering #16 Michigan, 4-2. The win was the first of Eno's career against the traditional CCHA power. The two clubs will complete the home-and-home Saturday night in Toledo.

In WCHA action, Brad Eidsness made 33 stops as #2 North Dakota dropped a physical 1-0 decision at #3 Denver. Drew Shore beat the Sioux netminder on a power play tap-in midway through the second period for the only goal of the night. Corey Fienhage played his second straight game for the injured Chay Genoway, finishing even with an interference minor while paired with freshman Andrew MacWilliam. DU's Marc Cheverie earned his fourth shutout of the season in his first game back after suffering a leg laceration three weeks ago.

Justin Jokinen returned to the lineup with three shots on goal as Minnesota State lumped #10 Alaska-Anchorage, 8-2. The sophomore wing was a scratch in last Saturday's loss to Colorado College.

On Thursday, Corey Tropp was credited with an assist as #6 Michigan State played to a 1-1- tie with #14 Notre Dame. Adam, Lagacé shine versus Russians

Luke Adam scored two goals and two assists to earn Player of the Game honors Wednesday as Team QMJHL trounced the Russian Selects 8-3 in Game #2 of the Subway SuperSeries. Chicoutimi's Jacob Lagacé joined the series as Adam's linemate, chipping in a goal and three assists in the victory.

Adam, who also won 10 of 14 faceoffs, lit the lamp in the opening minutes with a sharp wrister from the slot. Lagacé knocked a player off the puck in the corner to start the scoring play. A streaking Adam later one-timed a Lagacé feed in the second period to to make it 3-2 at the time, and in essence break the dam for Team Q.

In Monday's opener, Adam posted an assist and a game-high seven shots on goal from the left wing spot as The Q All-Stars defeated the Russians, 3-1. The QMJHL fired 56 shots at Russian netminder Alexander Zalivin in the win.

Adam, 19, finished with five points in the two-game set, and is certain for inclusion at Team Canada's World Junior selection camp in mid-December along with 2009 draft picks Zack Kassian and Brayden McNabb.

The Russian Selects traveled west in a 5-2 loss to Team OHL on Friday. No Sabres properties were in action for the win, but there will be representation on Monday when Kassian and Barrie's Nick Crawford suit up for the OHL in Game #4 of the Super Series.

Getting Zack back on track

After selecting Zack Kassian with the 13th pick last June, the Sabres were looking for the bruising forward to carry the momentum of his first NHL training camp back to the OHL for a dominant start to the season.

The intimidating Kassian, 18, was well primed upon his return to Peterborough, registering points in his first six games, and even beating the tar out of an Oshawa forward before getting knocked out for a month on October 2nd with a separated shoulder.

It's best to look beyond the numbers when measuring Kassian's total impact, so while he continued to chip in modestly after the shoulder healed, the Petes coaching staff last week felt the need to remind their captain that he needs to do a better job of leading by example for the team to be successful.

The results were captured in the 11/12 recap, and further details of how the coach motivated his tough all-star were explained in this weeks Peterborough Examiner.

Kassian comes out swinging against Sting

Zack Kassian didn’t like being called out by his coach in front of teammates at practice on Wednesday.

So the Peterborough Petes’ captain took his anger out on Sarnia Sting heavyweight Kyle Neuber 3:17 into the first period last night and it sparked a 7-3 victory before a Memorial Centre crowd of 3.177.

Poor practice habits this week after a punchless 2-0 loss Saturday in Sudbury led to Petes’ coach Ken McRae boiling over in practice. He dressed down a number of players and put the team through a rigorous skate.

Kassian was one of McRae’s many targets. He challenged Neuber, one of the league’s toughest players, and the two went toe-to-toe in a hard-fought battle during which each player had his moment. Kassian continued through the game to be a physical force and the rest of his team jumped on board for one of their best offensive outputs this season.

The way you practice is the way you play, and the Sabres organization should be thankful that the disciplined Petes coach didn't waste any time challenging his able-bodied right wing. Keeping Kassian's edge sharp will do nothing but enhance his development.

“Zack is our captain,” McRae said. “He’s a good player and it was more than him who got called out by me. I think he responded. You always tell stories about how to get your team going and that was one way when I was playing bad, when I played the game, to try to get the team going was to get in a scrap. Not that he was playing bad hockey. He didn’t have a great game in Sudbury like a lot of players, but it was a great opportunity for him to get the game in our favour right from the start.

“It was a great heavyweight bout and it got our bench going and we went on to get up 12- or 13-to-one in shots after that. That’s what you look for from a captain and a leader.”

Kassian, who has enough skill in his stick to oneday land on the #2 line, needs to keep picking his spots wisely while maintaining a physical presence on every shift. With 5'9 Tyler Ennis on the cusp of joining Derek Roy, Jason Pominvile, and Thomas Vanek in the top lines, the Sabres are going to need that muscle on the boards and in the paint sooner rather than later.

11/14 Recap: Adam stops short of dozen; Roo nets two

Luke Adam saw his career-high point streak end at eleven games on Saturday as Cape Breton lost to Rouyn-Noranda, 2-1. The Screaming Eagles top-line center collected 18 ponts (10+8) over the stretch to tie the QMJHL's longest point streak of the season. Adam is currently 4th in league scoring (34), 2nd in power play goals (8), and 2nd second in shots on goal (121).

Jacob Lagacé picked up a pair of assists as Chicoutimi defeated Lewiston, 4-3 in a shootout. The game's #2 star, Lagacé's helpers came in the third period as the Sags overcame a 3-1 deficit to force the extra session. Lagacé is the Sabres most productive prospect this season (mathematically), scoring 29 points (13+16) through his first 19 games.

In the USHL, Mark "Roo" Adams scored twice on the power play in Chicago's wild 7-6 OT loss to Youngstown. It was the first multi-goal game of the year for the rookie defenseman. The 6'2, 207-pound Providence commit is the only minus-player for the second place Steel, clocking in with a cumulative -1 through his first 13 junior "A" games.

In the OHL, Zack Kassian scored the Petes' only goal in a 6-1 loss to Barrie. The mark was Kassian's sixth of the season, giving him 12 points through his first 14 games. Nick Crawford was -1 for the Colts.

In the ECAC, Alex Biega notched his first points of the year with a goal and an assist in Harvard's 3-3 tie with #19 Princeton. The senior captain finished +3 while paired with freshman brother Danny for the first time at any level of hockey. Their brother, Michael, secured the tie with a goal with just :57 remaining.

In Grand Forks, North Dakota defenseman Corey Fienhage saw his first action since last December 6th, finishing even while looking comfortable with the game's speed in the Sioux's 3-1 loss to St. Cloud. The 6'3, 216-pounder was paired with fellow sophomore Ben Blood (OTT), and should continue to build upon his ten-game NCAA career with captain Chay Genoway sidelined indefinitely. NoDak netminder Brad Eidsness was spectacular in relief, making 16 saves after his scheduled night off lasted just 20:14 with freshman Aaron Dell allowing three goals on seven shots. The loss snaps a 17-game home unbeaten streak for the #2 Fighting Sioux.

Connor Knapp returned to the nets for the first time in three weekends as #1 Miami played to a 1-1 tie with Ferris State. The 6'5 sophomore made 32 saves while surrendering a power play goal against to reaffirm his Saturday position in the RedHawks goaltender rotation.

In Ann Arbor, Corey Tropp was even with four shots on goal as #13 Michigan State completed the home-and-home sweep of #6 Michigan with a 2-0 shutout. The Spartans are undefeated in their last seven games heading into next week's Thursday-Sunday matchup with #8 Notre Dame.

Nick Eno made 22 stops but Bowling Green couldn't overcome a 3-0 first period deficit in their 5-3 loss to Alaska-Fairbanks.

Drew MacKenzie was -2 as #15 Vermont got thrashed by #16 Boston College, 7-1. BC freshman Chris Kreider scored his first collegiate goal in the win.

Justin Jokinen was scratched in Minnesota State's 3-2 loss to surprising #10 Colorado College.

Ennis to make NHL debut

Per The Buffalo News Sabres Edge blog, the Sabres have called Tyler Ennis up from Portland of the AHL. Drew Stafford suffered a hip flexor in Saturday's shotout win over Calgary.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Tyler Ennis is expected to make his NHL debut tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers after winger Drew Stafford suffered a hip-flexor injury Friday night against the Calgary Flames.

Ennis, selected 26th overall in 2008, was flying from Buffalo to Portland and was scheduled to land about two hours before the game. Sabres coach Lindy Ruff was still figuring out how he would use the 20-year-old center but was considering playing him between veterans Thomas Vanek and Tim Connolly. Ennis also was expected to get some time on the power play.

"He makes a lot of good plays," Ruff said. "With a skill guy out of the lineup, we look to put a little more skill against these guys."

After watching Ennis on Thursday, the idea of putting him between Vanek makes very good sense. Ennis is always advancing the puck, and his creative talents are bound to unlock Vanek and force Connolly to shoot the puck more often. We'll see what happens come game time.

Tim Kennedy may not be pleased with a potential missed opportunity to move up in the shuffle, but his balanced, third-line aptitude has proven valuable to a club now missing productive forwards Stafford and Mike Grier.

11/13 Recap: Adam keeps piling; Tropp cool at Yost

Luke Adam extended his point streak to 11 games on Friday with a pair of power play goals in Cape Breton's 6-3 loss at Val-d'Or. The marks raise Adam's season numbers to 15-19-34 through 23 games, good for fourth in the QMJHL in points, and third in goals. The 6'2 pivot also collected six shots on goal while taking 12 of 19 draws for the Eagles (14-7-2-2).

In Chicoutimi, Jacob Lagacé scored a goal and an assist as the Saugueneens defeated Rimouski, 4-1. Lagacé continues his impressive 1.5 ppg clip (13-14-27), and now has points in four straight since missing a week with borderline concussion symptoms.

Marcus Foligno posted an assist as Sudbury put forth a strong effort but came up short in 6-5 shootout loss to Missisauga.

In the CCHA, Corey Tropp scored his ninth goal of the season as Michigan State edged rival Michigan, 3-2. Booed and taunted by the rambunctious Yost Arena faithful in his first game at U-M since last January's slashing incident, Tropp's marker came off a nice deke and drag move to open up enough room to pick a high corner. The defenseman beaten on that play was Steve Kampfer - the player who was on the receiving end of Tropp's act last season.

In Grand Forks, Brad Eidsness continued his early season roll with a 21-save performance as #2 North Dakota defeated St. Cloud, 4-2. Eidsness' sixth win of the season extends the Sioux's home unbeaten streak to 17 games. Sophomore defenseman Corey Fienhage again did not dress for North Dakota, but is all but guaranteed a role in Saturday's rematch after senior Chay Genoway left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury. Genoway, UND's captain, was taken out by a high cross-check and could be concussed. Fienhage needs to play a safe, simple game as he eases himself into playing time.

Nick Eno made 24 saves as Bowling Green earned their first victory of the season over Alaska-Fairbanks, 3-1. Making his second straight start , the junior made several difficult stops in what was likely his best performance since his freshman year.

All signs point to Connor Knapp getting back into the Miami nets on Saturday after watching the #2 RedHawks play to a 2-2 tie with Ferris State.

Justin Jokinen was even as Minnesota State suffered a 1-0 OT loss to Colorado College.

Alex Biega was -2 as Harvard lost at Quinnipiac, 5-1.

Pirates halt hot Amerks in HSBC

The Portland Pirates sailed into HSBC Arena on Thursday to defeat the Rochester Americans, 6-3. The victory snaps a two-game skid for the Pirates while ending the Americans 11-game win streak. Mark Mancari, Philip Gogulla, and Cody McCormick each had a goal and an assist to lead the Pirates .

Buzzing between Gogulla and Mancari from the first drop of the puck, Tyler Ennis picked up a pair of assists to fuel Portland’s effort. Ennis set-up a Mancari one-time laser to open scoring late in the period. He later shifted inside to create a tic-tac-toe passing play that was finished off by Gogulla to put the Pirates ahead for good at 12:56 of the second period.

Rookie center Paul Byron also showed his quickness and offensive skills, scoring a short-handed goal at 4:43 of the second period to open Portland’s four-goal floodgate. The fleeting Byron spent most of his shifts between vets McCormick and Jeff Cowan.

In a shuffling blueline, rookie T.J. Brennan spent most of his time with veteran Joe DiPenta. Drew Schiestel saw PK time with DiPenta, but played shifts with Mike Kostka. At one point, it appeared that Dennis Persson skated a shift at forward. Matt Generous and Mike Weber were a steady pair however. Weber was a +3 but did make one poor decision on a cross-ice pas in his own zone that was very similar to plays made in the pre-season.

Jhonas Enroth, who was sent down by Buffalo earlier in the day, kicked aside 23 saves to earn his fourth win of the season. Enroth will need to remain sharp if the 6-10 Pirates are to gain ground in the standings.

Nathan Gerbe (concussion), Marc-Andre Gragnani (leg), and Felix Schutz (shoulder) did not play for Portland.

The Rundown:

Mancari: 1G, 1A
Gogulla: 1G, 1A, +1
Byron: 1G, 1 SOG
Ennis: 2A
Weber: +3
Brennan: even
Schiestel: even
Generous: +1
Turnbull: 1A
Enroth: 23 saves, W

Tropp facing weekend hurdle

The Thursday edition of The State News reported on Corey Tropp's return to Yost Arena this weekend, site of last season's unfortunate slashing incident on Michigan dman, Steve Kampfer. The 6'0 junior enters the rivalry set as the nation's leading scorer with 8 goals and 15 points through the first 10 games for the surprising #14 Spartans.

The roof could explode off Yost Ice Arena tonight. And that’s why Comley called Tropp into his office Monday, just to prepare for the crazy atmosphere.

Comley expects the fans to hassle Tropp, but he isn’t expecting it to get too ugly.

“I think there will be an awful lot of the verbal directed at him, but not any more than that,” Comley said. “Fans are going to yell. They like to yell at us. Even if this never happened, how much different can it be than what it always is?”

CCHA commissioner Tom Anastos also isn’t expecting things to get out of hand on the ice.

“I expect the game will be well played by both teams and will be a typical rivalry game — filled with all of the emotion and intensity that is always part of this rivalry,” Anastos said.

Junior forward Andrew Rowe is friends with many Wolverines players and has been in recent contact with them.

“They are past it and we are past it,” Rowe said.

“I don’t think they are holding anything against us, and we aren’t holding anything against them.”

The U-M coaches don’t plan on making an announcement to try and keep the “Children of Yost” under control.

“Our administration has done a lot of things over the past few years as well as communicating with the students,” U-M assistant coach Billy Powers said. “Last year was a long time ago and I think our fans are more worried with being swept at home against Miami (Ohio) last weekend.”

But that doesn’t change senior co-captain Nick Sucharski’s, and the team’s view of, “let’s get in and out of there.”

11/12 Recap: New Colt Nick shows knack; Adam hangs ten

Nick Crawford sparkled in his Barrie debut on Thursday, posting a goal and three assists as the Colts dropped rival Sudbury, 5-0. All accounts have the smart defenseman showing impressive poise in all three zones en route to pushing the Central Division studs to an 8-1-0-1 mark in their last 10 games. Marcus Foligno continued his offensive struggles, finishing -2 with a pair of minors for the outgunned Wolves.

Jeff Giffen of the Sudbury Star had an interesting take on the blockbuster deal that saw Crawford leave Saginaw earlier in the week.

This is one of the more intriguing trades in recent OHL history, not so much because of what Barrie did, but more from Saginaw's perspective. Here's a club that was off to a 13-4 start to the season and has traded away it's version of a Pronger and Niedermayer combination to rebuild for the future?

That's virtually unheard of, but it speaks to what I have stated previously -- Windsor is so strong that some teams in the West may figure it's not even worth trying. The fact that Saginaw made this deal in November is stunning.

Barrie gets Calgary Flames draft pick T. J. Brodie and Buffalo Sabres prospect Nick Crawford, who are currently second and third in scoring among OHL defencemen. It's quite possible both will end their junior careers this season. In return, the Spirit get two 17-year olds who will still have two seasons remaining after this one. Forward Michael Sgarbossa and small but crafty blue-liner Ryan O'Connor -Barrie's 2008 first-round draft choice -- will keep Saginaw competitive this season and give them potential to be serious contenders in the future.

Also in Thursday OHL play, Zack Kassian had an assist and a fighting major as Peterborough roughed up Sarnia, 7-2. The Petes captain, who finished -1 for the third straight game, took on legit OHL heavyweight Kyle Neuber (41 regular season fights since 2007-08) in a spirited tussle at 3:17 of the opening period.

In the QMJHL, Luke Adam scored his 13th goal of the season as Cape Breton shutout Gatineau, 2-0. The Eagles main cog continued his dominating two-way pace by registering seven shots on goal and another six blocks. The goal extends Adam's current point streak to 10 games, the longest active run in the QMJHL. The victory was the Screaming Eagles' first road win over the Olympiques since October of 2004.

In a Tuesday USHL tilt, Mark Adams played even as Chicago doubled Des Moines, 6-3.

Crawford trots to new colors

With the Sunday recap serving as a proper lead-in, the Saginaw Spirit announced on Monday that they have traded D Nick Crawford, D T.J. Brodie, and a 2010 third round draft choice to Barrie for D Ryan O'Connor and F Michael Sgarbossa. Crawford and Brodie and currently ranked third and second respectively in OHL scoring for defensemen.

Both Brodie and Crawford are in their fourth season in the Ontario Hockey League and are joining their second team, after each has spent their last three seasons in Saginaw.

T.J. Brodie was a fourth round pick of the Calgary Flames in 2008. The 6’1”, 173 pound defender has 23 points in 19 games so far this season with the Spirit. The Dresden, ON native has 107 points in 170 career games played.

Nick Crawford was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the 6th round of the 2008 NHL entry draft, the Caledon resident has 21 points through 19 games so far this season and has played in at least 63 games in each of the past three years.

Sophomores Michael Sgarbossa and Ryan O’Connor spent just over a season with the Colts. O’Connor had 35 points in 62 games played last season, while Sgarbossa had 43 points in 67 games played in 2008-09. Sgarbossa has seven goals so far this year, and was fourth in team scoring with 20 points in 19 games played.

“Well we are definitely excited to have these two players join the team,” said Colts Head Coach Marty Williamson. “They are two great defensemen and two pieces of the puzzle that we were looking for. There both having great seasons so far and we are looking forward to having them.”

The teams also swapped conditional second round draft choices in 2011, both newcomers are expected to arrive in Barrie today and should make their debut when the Colts host the Wolves on Thursday night.

11/8 Recap: Crawford quietly cranking; Adam eyes ten

Nick Crawford scored a goal and an assist on Sunday as Saginaw doubled up Sault Ste. Marie, 6-3. Considered to be the Spirit's top shutdown defenseman, both of Crawford's points in the win came on the power play. His fifth multi-point effort of the season raises his total to 21 (4+17), good for third among all OHL blueliners behind Windsor's 2010 gem Cam Fowler (28) and teammate T.J. Brodie (23).

In the QMJHL, Luke Adam extended his point streak to nine games with an assist as Cape Breton downed Val-d'Or, 5-2. The do-it-all, first-line center carried the pace for the Eagles, leading all skaters with eight shots on goal and six blocks while winning 10 of 17 faceoffs.

Jacob Lagacé scored his 12th goal of the year as Chicoutimi lost to Drummondville, 6-4. His hustle down the middle was rewarded with the #3 star despite being a game=low -3.

Jordon Southorn scored his third goal of the season in PEI's 5-2 win over Bathurst.

In Hockey East, Drew MacKenzie (+1) set up the game winning goal as #16 Vermont blanked Providence, 3-0. The assist was MacKenzie's fourth of the season.

Portland updates will resume this week.

11/7 Recap: Lagacé loose and lively

Jacob Lagacé scored a goal and added three assists on Saturday as Chicoutimi thrashed Shawinigan, 7-0. Lagacé's linemate, Steve Lebel ('10), scored a natural hat trick in the second period to lead the Sags. Both players finished the night +4. Shawinigan's Maxime Legault saw his four-game point streak come to an end, finishing even with a minor penalty in the loss.

Lagacé, who has scored a goal and five assists in two games since missing a week with concussion-like symptoms, now has 24 points (11+13) in 16 games. The output was his third four-point effort of the young season after hitting that mark just twice in all of 2008-09.

In Halifax, Jordon Southorn was +1 as PEI lost to Halifax, 4-1. The defenseman has nine points (2+7) through 20 games for the Rocket (10-8-1-2).

In the OHL, Peterborough captain Zack Kassian (-1) and Sudbury grinder Marcus Foligno were both held without points in the Wolves 2-0 shutout of the Petes. A lumbering Foligno did draw one penalty on an early breakaway, but was mostly quiet throughout. Despite going 4-6 in their last ten, the Petes remain atop the East Division with a 10-11 record. The Sudbury win vaults them into third place in the Central Division (8-11-0-1).

In the NCAA, Brad Eidsness made 22 saves as #2 North Dakota closed the weekend sweep of Michigan Tech with a 4-1 win. The Chestermere, Alberta native moves his season mark to 5-1-1 to keep the Sioux locked in a three-way tie with Colorado College and Denver for first place in the WCHA. Sophomore blueliner Corey Fienhage did not dress for North Dakota.

Nick Eno stopped 36 shots, but Bowling Green could not overcome a two-goal deficit in a 3-2 CCHA loss to Ferris State. Eno's gutty effort raises his save percentage to .897 and could see him get the Friday start next weekend against Fairbanks. The Falcons (0-7-1) and Dartmouth (0-3) remain as the only D1 programs without a win.

In a surprising move, Connor Knapp watched for the second straight Saturday as #1 Miami took the broom to #4 Michigan, 5-1. Knapp was bogged down by a flu bug last weekend, but this week was held out because fellow sophomore Cody Reichard has been excellent this fall for the CCHA-leadng Redhawks. In fact, the sweep of the Wolverines at Yost was the first ever for Miami, and the first for a visiting club since 2001.

Alex Biega was even with a shot on goal as Harvard lost at #5 Cornell, 6-3. The Crimson held a 3-1 lead through the first 30-minutes before allowing the Big Red to swarm for five unanswered goals to seal the victory.

Mark Adams was even as Chicago was swept by Fargo, 3-2 in overtime. Undrafted Minnesota recruit Nate Schmidt scored the game winner for the Force. A 6'0, 197-pound defenseman, Schmidt was listed last June as a potdential fifth-round target in the SabresProspects draft preview. The pick was used to select Adams, who looks to be ramping up with Chicago despite being on the ice for the OT goal against.

Enroth to make NHL debut

Goaltender Jhonas Enroth will make his first NHL start on Saturday as the Sabres travel to take on the Bruins. Buffalo is playing their third game in four nights, with #1 Ryan Miller taking a rest after Wednesday and Friday starts. Enroth received his seond NHL call-up earlier in the week after Patrick Lamlime suffered a groin strain.

Enroth, 21, was 3-7 with a 3.90 goals against average and .872 save percentage in 10 starts for Portland (AHL) before getting the call to Buffalo.

Mr. October continues Q cruise

Reigning QMJHL Offensive Player of the Month Luke Adam notched three assists on Friday as Cape Breton defeated Acadie-Bathurst, 6-2. Adam has seven goals and seven assists over his current eight-game point streak, and has hit the scoresheet in 17 of 20 games this season to solidify the center position for the Screaming Eagles (12-6-2-2).

Maxme Legault had two assists as Shawinigan lost to Rimouski, 7-4. The 20-year old Cataractes captain has five goals, four assists, and a +4 in eight games since returning from his AHL stay with Portland.

In the OHL, Nick Crawford posted a pair of assists in Saginaw's 5-1 over Oshawa. The Spirit win was their fifth in a row, while Crawford upped his season point total to 19 (3+16) in 18 season games.

Marcus Foligno picked up an assist and a fighting major as Sudbury was outplayed in a 6-2 loss to Barrie. Foligno earned the third period takedown in one of four evening tilts, but Wolves continue to find themselves in last place in the Central Division with 7-11-0-1 mark.

In the CCHA, Corey Tropp was even with two shots on goal as unranked Michigan State played to a 3-3 tie with #10 Nebraska-Omaha. Despite the bagels, Tropp is currently tied with Duluth's Jack Connolly atop the NCAA leaderboard with 15 points (8+7). In 63 games prior to this season, the junior had scored just nine goals.

In the WCHA, Brad Eidsness made 21 saves to help #2 North Dakota earn a 4-2 win over Michigan Tech. The win ups the sophomore's record to 4-1-1 on the year. Corey Fienhage was again a healthy scratch, but could play on Saturday as the Sioux look to work him in to the blueline rotation.

Drew MacKenzie picked up a power play assist as #15 Vermont came back to tie #8 Lowell, 3-3.

Alex Biega was even as Harvard lost at Colgate, 5-4.

Connor Knapp took his usual Friday post on the RedHawks bench as #1 Miami took down #4 Michigan at Yost, 3-1. After missing last Saturday's spot in the rotation, Knapp wil likely get back to action on Saturday as the RedHawks look for the sweep.

Nick Eno served as back-up in Bowling Green's 5-1 loss to Ferris State.

In the USHL, Mark Adams (+1) scored an unassisted goal as Chicago lost to Fargo, 4-1. The mark was Adams' first of his junior "A" career for the first-place Steel.

11/4-5 Recap: Tropp stays hot; Kassian cashes in

On Thursday, Corey Tropp scored a goal and an assist to regain the national scoring lead as Michigan State shutout Nebraska-Omaha, 3-0. Heading into Friday night NCAA play, the junior was leading all scorers with 15 points (8+7) in 10 games.

In the QMJHL, Maxime Legault scored a goal and an assist as Shawinigan shutout Lewiston, 3-0. The Cataractes captain also registered six shots on goal in the win.

On Wednesday, Zack Kassian one-timed a puck in the opening minute as Peterborough lost to Kitchener, 6-4. The banger now has goals in two straight games, and five on the year, as he looks to heat up for the meat of the season after missing nearly a month with a separated shoulder.

Nick Crawford was +2 with an assist as Saginaw cruised past Sarnia, 4-1.

Suspension stands for Kassian

Zack Kassian will miss Peterborough's game with Belleville on Wednesday following a slew-footing penalty he received in Monday's win over Ottawa.

In the third period, the referee assessed Kassian a slew-footing match penalty which carries an automatic one-game suspension.

Petes' GM Jeff Twohey wanted the OHL to review the penalty because they disagreed with the call and Kassian denied using his legto kick the 67's player's feet out from under him.

However, the league announced Tuesday that the penalty would stand.

Kassian will miss the game in Belleville against the Bulls. He'll return to the lineup Thursday when the Petes host the Kitchener Rangers at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Centre.

Enroth called up to Buffalo

From Sabres.com:

The Buffalo Sabres have recalled goaltender Jhonas Enroth from Portland of the American Hockey League to fill in for an injured Patrick Lalime.

Lalime hurt his groin during Monday’s practice. Head Coach Lindy Ruff said it’s unclear when he will return.

“You never know with groins. We hope its not long, but it depends on how it responds,” he said.

Ryan Miller will start tonight’s match-up against the New York Islanders, but Ruff said if Lalime is not ready to play by the weekend, Enroth will likely make his season debut.

“We’re going to stick to the program,” Ruff said.

After compiling a .914 save percentage in his AHL rookie season, Enroth (6/25/1988, 5’10”, 166 lbs.), has struggled out of the gate in the 2009-10 campaign. The netminder is 3-7 in his first 10 games, with a 3.90 GAA and 0.872 save percentage.

Luke Adam of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles is the award-winner on offence after tallying ten goals, including two game-winners, and twelve assists in fourteen games. McNabb out at least a month

Kootenay Ice defenseman Brayden McNabb will be out of action for four to six weeks after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's 1-0 win over Seattle. In the opening minute of period two, McNabb took a clean hit along the boards from a T-Birds forward and immediately hobbled off the ice favoring his left leg.

Recently selected for Team WHL in the upcoming Canada/Russia Subway Super Series, the 6'4 defender hits the injury list ranked sixth in scoring among WHL defenseman (3-13-16). I'll have more on this as details become available.

Kassian finds net, suspension in Petes win

In a rare Monday morning OHL contest, Zack Kassian scored his first goal since returning from a separated shoulder as Peterborough defeated Ottawa, 5-4 in a shootout. The goal came at 12:37 of the first period when he got underneath the 67's defense and slid a backhander past netminder Chris Perugini. Kassian has four goals and five assists in 10 games this season.

With the game tied 3-3 in the third period, the Petes captain was assessed a five-minute match penalty and misconduct for slew footing forward Thomas Nesbitt. The penalty carries a one-game suspension, but will be be reviewed before league officials make a final decision.

The 6'3, 215-pounder has been displaying his aggressive style since missing nearly a month, racking up a pair of checking-to-the-head penalties in the two games leading up to the Monday morning misconduct.

11/1 Recap: Adam streaks to seven; McNabb down

Luke Adam continued his recent tear on Sunday, scoring his 12th goal of the season and leading the way with a game-high six shots on goal as Cape Breton fell to Quebec, 3-2 in overtime. Adam, who also blocked five Remparts shots, was rewarded for his all-around effort by being named the game's #1 star. The Sabres second round pick in 2008, Adam has collected seven goals and four assists over his recent seven-game point streak.

Maxime Legault continues to have a positive impact since his return to juniors, scoring a goal and an assist as Shawinigan dropped a 3-2 decision to Victoriaville.

Also in Sunday Q play, Jacob Lagacé returned to the Chicoutimi lineup after missing a week's worth of games, picking up a pair of assists as the Sags defeated Baie-Comeau, 4-3. The helpers raise Lagacé's season total to 20 points (10+10).

However, just as one table in the Sabres prospects training room was vacated, another was getting prepped as Brayden McNabb left Kootenay's game with Seattle in the second period with a left knee injury. The rugged defender is expected to miss at least a week of action pending further evaluation.

In the OHL, Marcus Foligno (-1) assisted on the only Sudbury goal in a 3-1 loss to Mississauga-St. Mike's.

Rounding out Saturday's slate, Roo Adams was +1 in Chicago's 6-5 win over Cedar Rapids.

10/31 Recap: Tropp pots winner; Lagacé ready

Corey Tropp continued his blazing season start on Saturday by cashing the game winning goal as Michigan State defeated Western Michigan, 5-3. Tropp's closer, his 7th of the year, came at 6:44 of the third period when he roofed a backhand off a cross-ice feed from Nick Sucharski. The junior's seven goals and 13 points lead the NCAA through the first month of play, all the while propelling the unranked Spartans to a 6-2 record.

Justin Jokinen was -1 with a team-best five shots on goal as Mankato played to a 4-4 tie at #3 Denver. The sophomore showed good jump on a line with Eli Zuck and Zach Harrison one night after a collision in the Pios crease that left DU netminder Marc Cheverie out of action for at least a month with a deep calf laceration.

Connor Knapp missed his Saturday nod as #1 Miami squeaked past Northern Michigan, 2-1. Knapp has been shaky in his past two starts, but it appears that the sit was more about Knapp recovering from a flu bug than it was sub-standard play.

Bowling Green's Nick Eno again gave way to 21-year old freshman Andrew Hammond as the Falcons lost at #13 Nebraska-Omaha, 3-1. Despite inflated goals against and save percentage numbers, Eno made several spectacular stops last Friday against Minnesota State. Still, Hammond was the Falcons best player on Saturday and earned the back-to-back road starts this weekend against UNO.

In the OHL, Nick Crawford was even as Saginaw took a 5-4 shootout win over defending Memorial Cup champion Windsor. 2010 eligible Ivan Telegin scored his 9th and 10th goals of the season for the Spirit while consensus top-3 for next June, Taylor Hall, netted his 17th for the Spits. Saginaw sits alone in second place in the OHL's West Division with 22 points. Windsor still paces the league with 29 points.

In the QMJHL, Jordon Southorn was -1 as PEI was shut out by Montreal, 3-0. The Rocket (10-7-2-1) sit in fourth place in the tightly packed Atlantic Division.

Also of note from Eastern Canada, Chicoutimi Sagueneens forward Jacob Lagacé was held out of action this week as he continues to feel effects from being on the wrong end of a thundering blow to the head from Quebec's Danick Paquette last Friday (10/23). It was thought that the Sags leading goal man would return on Thursday, but precautionary measures have kept him off the ice. With headaches gone, Lagacé skated hard on Wednesday and will be on the ice when the Sags battle Baie-Comeau on Sunday.
