Excellent season ends for Petersen

Cal Petersen made 41 saves Tuesday as the Waterloo Black Hawks lost the fifth and deciding game of the Clark Cup Final 3-2 to the Indiana Ice. The loss ends an strong ramp-up year for Petersen, who finished the regular season tied for the most wins by a goaltender (27) to capture a USHL Second Team All-Star selection. The Waterloo, IA native will enroll at Notre Dame in the fall.

Petersen shut the door in the second period with 15 stops, including an excellent breakaway save in the later stages to preserve a 2-1 lead at the end of the forty minutes. The advantage would be lost as a rebound putback got the Ice even at 11:12 of the third. With the momentum shifting, Providence commit Brian Pinho took a drop pass and beat Petersen for for the game winner with 2:15 left in regulation to thrust the Ice, who will go dormant next season, to their second league title in team history.
