10/18 Recap: Petersen backstops Irish on night of goals

Notre Dame goaltender Cal Petersen earned his first-ever NCAA victory Saturday, stopping 27 of 28 shots as the Fighting Irish downed Lake Superior State 5-1 to sweep the weekend series. The USHL product was sharp and agile with good rebound control all game long. Fellow freshman Connor Hurley chipped a puck and then filled a lane for a screen to earn an assist on the third Notre Dame goal. The helper was Hurley's first collegiate point. Notre Dame welcomes Niagara to town next weekend for a non-conference set.

In the OHL, Brendan Lemieux snagged the game-winning goal plus an assist to help Barrie to a 7-4 triumph over Windsor. The feisty winger has six goals and 11 points through his first nine games. Lemieux will go for a third-straight multiple-point effort on Wednesday when Barrie travels to Owen Sound.



Justin Bailey produced a power play marker as Kitchener led for 58 minutes but ended with a 2-1 shootout loss at Saginaw. The third-year winger now has eight goals and 13 points in eight games since being returned from his second NHL training camp. Bailey was stopped as the first Rangers shooter to move to two-for-three on shootout attempts this season. The Rangers square off with Guelph on Tuesday.

Eric Cornel finished off a three-way passing play for an even-strength tally as Peterborough dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to Plymouth. Cornel went without a goal in his first three games this season, but has since connected for four in his last five. The Petes next host Saginaw on Thursday.

NCAA: Brad Navin netted his first goal of the year as Wisconsin closed out their weekend with a 4-1 loss Northern Michigan. The Badgers get two weeks off before playing a series with former WCHA rival North Dakota beginning on Fri., November 7.

J.T. Compher (3 SOG) notched an assist as Michigan earned the weekend split with a 2-1 win over New Hampshire . The Wolverines trek to New England next weekend for games with Lowell and Boston University.

USHL: Chris Brown scored his third goal of the year as Green Bay edged Tri-City 4-3 in a shootout. Brown, who was stopped as the Gamblers' first shootout option, has five points in his first six games. Green Bay returns to action Friday at Muskegon.

WHL: Brycen Martin logged a minus-one rating as Swift Current was defeated by Moose Jaw 4-3. The Broncos host Portland on Wednesday.

ECHL: Justin Kea finished with a minus-two rating as Elmira was dumped by Kalamazoo 6-2. The Jackals will play a three-game series next weekend versus Reading.
