The 2013-14 season was an excellent one for NCAA freshmen in the Sabres' system. If the early returns from South Bend are any indication, the 2014-15 campaign may prove just as fruitful.
Freshman pivot Connor Hurley scored his first-ever NCAA goal Saturday and added a pair of assists, and fellow rookie Cal Petersen made 23 saves for his first collegiate shutout as Notre Dame earned the weekend sweep with a 7-0 victory over Niagara. Hurley has recorded points in three straight contests for a total of six (1+5) through five collegiate appearances. Petersen improves to 2-1 with a 1.34 GAA and .950 save% in his first semester of duty. Notre Dame remains at home next weekend to open the Hockey East schedule versus Vermont.
Elsewhere in the college ranks, Judd Peterson assisted on the game-winning goal at 8:18 of the third period as No. 9 St. Cloud State earned the weekend split with a 3-2 victory at No. 2 Union. The helper was Peterson's first collegiate point. Sabres development camper Andrew Prochno scored a goal for the Huskies. The defending NCAA champs, Union was previously unbeaten in their last 22 games dating back to last season. Next up for Peterson's Huskies is a home-and-home series with the top-ranked Gophers.

Hudson Fasching (SOG) saw his three-game goal streak snapped as No. 1 Minnesota closed out Bemidji State 5-3. Christian Isackson finished with an even rating for the Gophers, who move on to face former WCHA rival St. Cloud State on Friday.
J.T. Compher (-2, 2 SOG) was unable to get on the score sheet as No. 14 Michigan was defeated by No. 11 Boston University 3-2. The sophomore winger has collected three assists through his first five games. Zach Werenski ('15) collected a goal and an assist for the Wolverines, while fellow 2015 draft horse Jack Eichel scored the game-tying goal in the third period to give him a team-best six points (3+3) in his first three NCAA contests. Michigan visits Michigan Tech next weekend.
Anthony Florentino registered a power play assist as No. 5 Providence battled to a 2-2 tie at No. 3 North Dakota. The helper, which came during a five-on-three advantage, gives the sophomore rearguard three assists in the Friars' four games. Defenseman Mark Adams punched one shot on goal while skating on the Friars' middle pair. Providence kicks off the Hockey East schedule next weekend with a home-and-home series with Boston University.
In OHL action, Nick Baptiste (-3) was unable to get going as Sudbury was thrashed by Erie 8-1. Stud 2015 draft prospects Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome each posted a goal and three assists for the Otters. McDavid has gotten on the score sheet in all 12 of the Otters' games en route to posting a league-high 34 points (11+23). Strome's big night leaves him with 10 goals and 31 points through the dozen games. Sudbury will see more highly rated 2015 draft prospects on Friday when they face Nikita Korostelev, Pavel Zacha and the Sarnia Sting on Friday.
Justin Bailey (-2) earned one assist as Kitchener got past Plymouth 5-3. Sonny Milano (CBJ) scored a goal and two assists for the Whalers to give him six points through his first two OHL games. The Rangers host Ottawa on Sunday.
Eric Cornel logged a minus-two rating as Peterborough was doubled by Sault Ste. Marie 4-2. Blake Speers ('15) had two assists for the Hounds to earn the game's number one star. The Petes return to work Thursday when they host Mississauga.
In the QMJHL, Vaclav Karabacek (-1) recorded one shot on goal as Gatineau lost in a shootout 4-3 to Shawinigan. Karabacek did score in his shootout attempt, but it was the only goal the Olympiques could muster while the Cataractes connected on two of their five chances. Gatineau closes the weekend with a Sunday meeting with Sherbrooke.
In the USHL, Christopher Brown (-2) produced four shots on goal as Green Bay lost at Muskegon 4-2. The Gamblers are off until a Friday visit to Bloomington.
In the ECHL, Justin Kea fired blanks as Elmira was dropped by Reading 5-1. The clubs complete the three-game stand Sunday in Reading.
In the WHL, Brycen Martin skated to an even rating as Swift Current edged Regina 2-1. The Broncos will be off until Friday when they travel to Calgary.
