Four score as Amerks down Marlies

Dan Catenacci, Akim Aliu, Phil Varone (2nd star) and Mikhail Grogorenko (1st star) all picked up goals Saturday as Rochester defeated Toronto 4-1. Nathan Lieuwen stopped 24 of 25 shots while the Amerks received points from 10 different players to collect their second victory in three tries to open the 2014-15 season.

With the Amerks applying pressure, Catenacci snuck into the middle lane with his stick on the ice and buried a Matt Ellis feed at 5:15 of the opening period for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Catenacci's first of the season. Mark Pysyk drew a secondary assist on the play.

The Amerks would keep the hits coming quickly in the second period, beginning with an Aliu tally just 24 seconds in to make it a 2-0 lead. Luke Adam and Nick Petrecki were credited with the helpers.

Rochester struck again at 4:07 when Varone entered the zone and threw a puck at the net for his second of the season. Chad Ruhwedel earned the assist for his team-leading fifth point of the season.

Grigorenko extended Rochester's lead to 4-0 midway through the middle frame with a spinning backhand finish at the doorstep. William Carrier picked up the lone assist to give him points in each of his first three professional games.

Toronto closed out the scoring early in the third period when Connor Brown roofed a shot for his first professional goal.

The Amerks are off until Wednesday when they host Rockford.
