Cal Petersen set a new NCAA single-game record Friday, stopping 87 of 91 shots as Notre Dame was defeated by Massachusetts 4-3 in the fifth overtime in the opening game of their Hockey East first round playoff series. The contest, which lasted for 151:42, was the longest in NCAA hockey history.
The overtime periods were filled with exciting end-to-end action, but strong goaltending from both sides extended the game to record duration. The Minutemen would get the deciding marker at 8:18 of the eighth period when a shot from the right wing was blocked by Robbie Russo (NYI), with the rebound being deposited off the left post and in by Shane Walsh.
The loss moves Petersen to 10-14-3 on the year with a 2.32 GAA and .927 save%.
Freshman centerman Connor Hurley recorded five shots on goal for the Fighting Irish. He had a glorious opportunity off a feed from Mario Lucia (MIN) minutes before the game-winner, but he couldn't get a clean shot off.
The two clubs will get together again Saturday at 7:05pm with Notre Dame needing a win to keep their season alive.

Elsewhere, Sean Malone netted two assists as Harvard opened their ECAC first round playoff series with a 6-2 win over Brown. Malone has been excellent in his 14 games for the Crimson, posting six goals and 15 points while launching 43 shots on goal. Brown winger Max Willman contributed one shot on goal in defeat.
Jason Kasdorf turned away 36 of 38 shots as RPI skated past Clarkson 3-2. The teams will continue the ECAC best-of-three series on Saturday.
J.T. Compher earned one assist to extend his point streak to three games as Michigan dropped a 6-4 decision to Penn State. Compher, who also punched six shots on goal, has eight goals and 19 points this season.
Hudson Fasching (+1) registered two shots on goal as Minnesota doubled Ohio State 4-2. Fasching looked to have earned a secondary assist on the third Gophers goal, which would have given him points in seven of his last eight outings, but no credit was awarded. Christian Isackson centered Minnesota's fourth line in the victory.
Judd Petersen recorded one shot on goal as St. Cloud State was defeated by Denver 3-2. The freshman winger has six points (3+3) in 31 games.
Brad Navin produced one shot on goal as Wisconsin fell to Michigan State 3-0. Navin has six points (1+5) this season for the Badgers, who have now been shut out in three of their last four games.
In the OHL, Jean Dupuy scored his 16th goal of the year as Sault Ste. Marie earned a 5-4 victory at Sarnia. The marker gives Dupuy nine points in his last eight games. Pavel Zacha ('15) posted a goal and an assist for the losing side, while stud 2016 prospect Jakob Chychrun also produced a goal and an assist.
Eric Cornel notched one assist as Peterborough was downed by Kingston 4-2. The helper gives Cornel points in three straight games and a total of 52 (14+38) on the year.
In the WHL, Sam Reinhart secured one asssit to extend his point streak to nine games as Kootenay lost to Red Deer 2-1 in a shootout. Reinhart has amassed 58 points (17+41) through 40 games.
Brycen Martin logged a minus-one rating in Saskatoon's 2-1 loss to Lethbridge. Martin has gone without a point in five straight games.
In the QMJHL, Vaclav Karabacek logged a minus-two rating as Baie-Comeau was trumped by Val-d'Or 5-1. Karabacek has 38 points (16+22) this season, but has connected for just one in his last five games.
In the AHL, Chad Ruhwedel had a goal and an assist to guide Rochester to a 3-1 win at Hamilton. Matt Hackett continued his recent hot streak with 29 saves to get the win. Evan Rankin and Justin Mercier provided singles for the Amerks.
In USHL action, Christopher Brown assisted on the game-winning goal and added three shots on goal as Tri-City earned a 3-2 win over Fargo. Brown has assists in three of his first four games with the Storm.
