12/18 Recap: Borgen points in USA win; Amerks roll

Team USA hopeful Will Borgen skated on a defensive pair with Miami University standout Louis Belpedio (MIN) Friday, notching one assist as the Americans skated to a 4-0 exhibition win over the UMass Minutemen. Borgen, who originally wasn't listed in the lineup by USA Hockey prior to the contest, earned an assist on Team USA's third goal at 5:00 of the second period when his dump into the right corner rebounded right to the stick of Sonny Milano (CLB) for the quick-strike tally. Milano scored twice and added one assist to pace the Team USA attack. UMass freshman defender Ivan Chukarov ended with a minus-two rating in the loss.

In the AHL, rookie forwards Justin Bailey and Jean Dupuy each picked up goals while Andrey Makarov stopped 28 of 29 shots as Rochester blew out Hartford 7-1. Makarov was eyeing his first shutout of the season before having the effort spoiled with 22 seconds remaining. Jason Akeson scored a goal and an assist for the Amerks, while defensemen Matt Donovan, Bobby Sanguinetti, Chad Ruhwedel and Jerome Leduc got the offense going with the game's first four goals.

In OHL action, Eric Cornel scored his 17th goal of the season as Peterborough was toppled by Ottawa 5-4. Cornel, who connected when he carried the puck through center and retrieved the rebound of his own dump-in for the finish, has scored in two straight games after driving the center lane for a nice goal in Thursday's shootout loss to Owen Sound. His recent tear has seen him accumulate 26 points in his last 19 games.

In the WHL, Brendan Guhle recorded a plus-two rating and two shots on goal as Prince Albert earned a 3-1 win over Kelowna. Devante Stephens logged his second career fighting major in the loss while finishing the night with a minus-one rating. With a delayed penalty coming to the Raiders, Stephens was skating to the bench when he was bumped from behind by Tim Vanstone. The two briefly tussled before dropping the gloves. Stephens tossed a few right hands and was grazed by an uppercut before the two tumbled to the ice.

Giorgio Estephan was kept off the scoresheet as Lethbridge downed Edmonton 3-1. The quiet night puts a halt to Estephan's four-game point streak.

Brycen Martin finished with an even rating as Everett edged Vancouver 3-2 in overtime. Martin has three assists in eight games since being dealt to the Silvertips.
