1/9 Recap: Fasching propels Gophers

Hudson Fasching connected for a pair of short-handed goals Saturday to lead Minnesota to a 7-1 victory at Penn State. Both goals were excellent displays of the NHL speed and hands that the big power forward has developed since arriving at Minnesota. The first short-handed markers of Fasching's collegiate career elevate him into the team scoring lead with 11 goals and 19 points through 19 games.

Cal Petersen made 36 saves as Notre Dame battled to a 3-3 overtime tie at Western Michigan. Unbeaten in his last eight starts, Petersen's recent surge has moved him to a 10-4-7 record, 2.26 GAA and .926 save%. Connor Hurley recorded a minus-two rating, leaving him with three goals and 10 points at the 20-game mark.

Freshman defenseman Ivan Chukarov contributed one assist as UMass was dealt a 7-2 loss at Boston University. Chukarov has three helpers and a minus-11 rating through 21 collegiate tilts.

Sean Malone saw his two-game goal streak and three-game point streak snapped as Harvard fell to Quinnipiac 5-4 in overtime at Madison Square Garden. Malone has shown extra hop in his step coming off the break en route to upping his season take to three goals and nine points through his first dozen appearances for the Crimson.

Judd Peterson produced three shots on goal as St. Cloud State was defeated by Colorado College 5-2. Peterson remains tied for the team lead with 12 goals this season, but has gone without a point in his last two games. Will Borgen remained out of the Huskies lineup for the second straight game

Chris Brown was unable to produce as Boston College scored three unanswered goals to earn a 4-4 tie with Providence.  The freshman forward has collected seven points (2+5) in his first 20 games, but has been unable to get on the scoresheet in his last seven outings. Anthony Florentino remained out of the Providence lineup for the second straight game.

In the WHL, Giorgio Estephan captured one assist and a plus-three rating in Lethbridge's 6-1 win over Kootenay. The helper gives Estephan a career-high 52 points (22+30) in his 42nd game, eclipsing the 51 points he piled up in 64 games last year. A strong second-half performer a season ago, the top-line pivot now has points in eight straight games and 12 of his last 13 for the first-place Hurricanes.

Brendan Guhle (-1) logged two shots on goal as Prince Albert cruised to an 8-2 victory over Medicine Hat. Through 35 games, the mobile defender has six goals, 17 points and a plus-one rating.

Brycen Martin finished with a plus-one rating in Everett's 3-2 overtime loss to Seattle. Martin has 30 points (4+26) in 40 games, including a goal and five helpers in 15 games since joining the Silvertips.

Devante Stephens logged an even rating as Kelowna outgunned Tri-City 7-5. A defensive-minded anchor for the Rockets, Stephens has just one assist in his last 20 games.

In the OHL, Eric Cornel picked up two assists as Peterborough skated to a 7-2 win over Hamilton. Cornel has captured 18 goals and 47 points in 41 games.

Nathan Lieuwen made 37 saves to earn the game's first star as Rochester edged Binghamton 2-1. The Amerks received power play goals from Bobby Sanguinetti and Dan Catenacci to earn the win. Cal O'Reilly picked up helpers on both tallies.
