3/19 Recap: Fasching done as other eye playoffs

Hudson Fasching was held to four shots on goal as Minnesota fell in the Big Ten Tournament Championship to Michigan 5-3. Fasching's junior season, and presumably his final one with a potential contract from the Sabres to be negotiated, ends with 20 goals and 38 points - both career highs.

Will Borgen produced two shots on goal and Judd Peterson was blanked in lower line duty as St. Cloud State earned a 3-1 victory over Minnesota-Duluth in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship. The Huskies will be a No. 1 seed when the NCAA brackets are announced Sunday.

Sean Malone was held out of the lineup after dealing with cramps as Harvard lost the ECAC Tournament Championship to Quinnipiac 4-1. Malone has 10 goals, 19 points and a plus-12 rating this season for a Crimson squad that will gain a berth in the NCAA tournament when the regional matchups are released Sunday.

In the QMJHL, Vaclav Karabacek scored for the second straight game to earn the game's first star as Moncton was defeated by Acadie-Bathurst 5-4 in a shootout. Karabacek netted 18 goals and 30 points this season while missing six weeks of action due to his World Junior tryout and hand injury. The Wildcats begin the playoffs Friday against Victoriaville.

Eric Cornel recorded one assist as Peterborough ended the regular season with a 5-4 overtime victory over Niagara. Cornel's sensational campaign as the Petes' captain resulted in career bests of 27 goals and 83 points. He'll look to keep it going when the Petes begin their first-round playoff series versus one of North Bay or Barrie.

In the WHL, Devante Stephens picked up one assist and a plus-three rating as Kelowna capped the schedule with a 10-1 smoking of Vancouver. The helper gives Stephens 11 points (2+9), which equals his previous season's total. The Rockets will have the home-ice advantage in their opening round playoff series with Kamloops.

Brycen Martin recorded one assist as Everett was defeated by Victoria 4-1. The left-handed defender ends the year with six goals and 37 points in 66 games between Everett and Saskatoon. The Silvertips have drawn the Portland Winterhawks as their first round playoff opponent. That series will begin Friday.

Giorgio Estephan went without a gal for the fifth straight game as Lethbridge was doubled by Medicine Hat 4-2. Estephan ends the regular season with career bests of 30 goals and 44 assists. The Hurricanes begin a best-of-seven quarterfinal series Friday against the Regina Pats.

Brendan Guhle was given the night off as Prince Albert closed the regular season with a 3-2 loss to Saskatoon. Guhle netted 10 goals this year as part of a 28-point season. The Raiders, who finished second in the WHL's East Division standings, will square off with Moose Jaw in the first round of the playoffs beginning Friday.
