Armia hat trick leads Finns in finale

Joel Armia scored a hat trick Friday and added an assist as Finland closed the 2013 World Junior Championship with an 11-4 stomping of Slovakia. The four-point output gives Armia 12 points (6+6, 3 PPG, 1 GWG) through the tourney’s six games, which as of end of play Friday was tied for tournament’s points lead with Finnish teammate and Calgary Flames prospect Markus Granlund. Armia's six goals to Granlund's five give him the technical scoring lead heading into tomorrow's gold and bronze medal tilts.

The Assat Pori winger rounded out his tourney with an even rating, 12 penalty minutes, 26 shots on goal, and a player of the game award earned in Finland’s preliminary round outing versus Sweden. The production is a step up for the 2012 gathering that saw him collect five goals and seven points in seven games en route to Finland’s fourth place finish.

Armia will head back to Pori and enjoy a brief break before resuming the SM-Liiga schedule.

Armia strikes twice as Finns get bounced

Joel Armia scored a pair of power play goals Monday but Finland was eliminated from medal contention with a 7-4 loss to rival Sweden. Getting the game to overtime would have gotten them into third place, but instead the Finns head to relegation and will go home without a medal for the seventh straight year while Switzerland advances.

With Finland trailing 3-0, Armia emerged from the corner with the puck and slung a quick wrist shot short-side over the goalie's shoulder to get his team on the board with less than four minutes to play in the opening period. The tally was his first of the tournament.

Armia kept chugging into the middle frame, eventually connecting for his second strike when he opened up for a big one-timer from the top of the faceoff circle to tie the game 3-3 in the game's 24th minute.

Finland trailed 4-3 late in the game, but saw their power play cut short by a minute when Armia took a hooking penalty with 3:04 left on the clock.

Finland's failure to escape the preliminary round of games is surprising given their pre-tournament success in beating both Canada and Team USA prior to leaving for Ufa.

Armia helps late in Finnish comeback

Joel Armia produced an assist with 1:40 left in regulation Sunday as Finland came from behind to earn a 5-4 shootout victory over Switzerland. The victory gives Finland five points through round robin play, keeping their hopes alive in the 2013 World Junior Championship. A regulation loss would have all but eliminated the Finns from medal contention.

Despite the late helper and a team-leading eight shots on goal, Armia has continued to see his effectiveness taper off after a solid outing in Finland's tourney-opening win versus Latvia. His success rate in the offensive zone was quite low for the second straight game, with his possessions more often than not resulting in Swiss takeaways. Adding insult to injury was a third period tripping penalty, Armia's second minor infraction of the game, that allowed the Swiss to take a 4-2 lead prior to the Finns mounting the comeback.

Armia was stopped in his shootout attempt before linemate Markus Granlund was able to beat Melvin Nyffeler to secure the victory and get the extra point for Finland.

The Finns move on to battle rival Sweden on Monday.
