Possler gets helper; Buravchikov calls it quits

Gustav Possler assisted on the game winning goal Sunday as MODO skated to a 2-1 preseason victory over Timra IK. Possler, whose line with fellow U20 products Edwin Hedberg and Christopher Bengtsson was buzzing all game, found defender Nichlas Torp from behind the net on the power play for the go-ahead tally just 25 seconds into the third period. Linus Ullmark served as backup while Columbus prospect Anton Forsberg stopped 21 of 22 shots to get the win.

Elsewhere, Nick Baptiste was held off the scoresheet as the Sudbury Wolves were defeated by Dynamo Shinnik 5-1 in their opening tilt at the 2013 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. The Wolves, who entered the tournament as the defending champions following a victory over the Waterloo Blackhawks in the 2012 title tilt, will look to even their record Monday versus Finnish club HPK.

Former Sabres prospect Vyacheslav Buravchikov, 26, has retired from professional hockey due to heart problems. Buravchikov, who captained Russian to a silver medal at the 2007 World Junior Championship, was a KHL mainstay on the Ak Bars Kazan blueline before playing the last three seasons with CSKA Moscow. The 26-year old finishes his KHL career with 29 points (14+15) and a minus-23 rating in 178 games. Buravchikov was originally selected by Buffalo in the sixth round of the 2006 draft (191st overall).
