McNabb earns WHL weekly honor

Kootenay Ice defenseman Brayden McNabb has been named the Boston Pizza WHL Player of the Week for December 14th-20th.

McNabb collected 9 points, scoring three goals and six assists in three games over the past week, helping the Ice post a 3-0-0-0 record in that span.

On Tuesday, December 15th, the Kootenay Ice hosted Central Division foes, the red hot Medicine Hat Tigers. McNabb scored one goal and added a pair of assists as the Ice downed the Tigers 6-4 and was named the games 3rd Star. On Friday, December 18th, the Ice were in Lethbridge for the front end of a home-and-home series with the Hurricanes. McNabb picked up a goal and an assist as the Ice defeated the ‘Canes 8-2. In the latter half of the home-and-home series in Kootenay on Saturday night, McNabb netted one goal and three assists in a 6-1 victory over the Hurricanes. He was also named the games 2nd Star.

McNabb is currently on a four game goal scoring streak and his nine points over the last three games has him sitting 5th among all WHL defenceman with 35 points (11 goals, 24 assists) in 29 games. 12/19 Recap: Crawford continues career campaign

Nick Crawford scored two goals and added two assists on Saturday as Barrie won their 21st straight by edgeing Sudbury, 5-4. Crawford's game winner gives him a career-high eight goals on the season, while raising his point total to an even 40 through 34 games - good for 2nd overall among OHL defensemen. Marcus Foligno (-1) recorded a power play assist for the Wolves to up his numbers to 4-11-15 through 35 games.

Zack Kassian ended his four-game scoring slump with a pair of third period assists as Peterborough defeated Ottawa, 4-2. Kassian enters a twelve-day break with eight goals and 25 points through 28 games, and is expected by many to return a very motivated presence when the Petes hit the ice on the 31st. Asking #9 to be a "presence" and not "leader" seems proper because getting back to square one with a fierce on-ice attitude is his most effective way of exemplifying the "C" for the Petes.

In the WHL, Brayden McNabb scored a goal and three assists as Kootenay dumped Lethbridge, 6-1. All seven goals were scored on the power play, with McNabb netting his 11th of the year late in the second period.

In NCAA play, Drew MacKenzie was +2 with three shots on goal as Vermont defeated Dartmouth, 4-3.

Justin Jokinen finished +1 as Minnesota State lost to Nebraska-Omaha, 2-1.

Brad Eidsness made 14 saves through a period and a half, and Corey Fienhage finished even as North Dakota lost an exhibition tilt with the U.S. U20 World Junior entry, 4-2. SabresProspects first-round endorsement last June, Chris Kreider, scored a pair of goals to earn #1 star honors for Team USA.

In the USHL, Mark Adams was even with a holding minor in Chicago's 4-1 loss to Omaha.

12/18 Recap: Lagacé finds four more

Jacob Lagacé scored four goals and an assist on Friday to power Chicoutimi past Baie-Comeau, 6-2. The hat trick, the fourth of the year for the 5'11 forward, ups Lagacé's impressive season numbers to 27 goals and 48 points through 30 games. Lagacé's big night was his second in as many seasons against the Drakkar after posting four goals and an assist to spearhead a 10-5 win last January.

In NCAA play, Justin Jokinen scored his second goal of the season as Minnesota State played to 1-1 tie with Nebraska-Omaha. Skating on the fourth line, the sophomore hit on a tough angle shot from the left circle to open the game's scoring at 8:40 of the first period.

Elsewhere, Jordon Southorn had two assists as PEI dropped an 8-5 decision to Quebec. The points snap a seven game pointless streak for Southorn, his longest dry spell since March of 2007.

Maxime Legault posted six shots on goal as Shawinigan was shut out by Victoriaville, 5-0.

In the OHL, Nick Crawford was +2 with an assist as Barrie dropped the hammer on Kingston, 10-2.

Zack Kassian finished -4 as Peterborough was bounced by Ottawa, 8-0. The slumping Kassian is -5 with no points in his last four games.

Marcus Foligno was even as Sudbury downed Erie, 5-4.

In the USHL, Mark Adams was even with a delay of game minor as Chicago got past Omaha, 3-2.

Kassian sits for curfew miscue

Peterborough Petes captain Zack Kassian did not play in Saturday's game against Niagara after being suspended for missing Thursday night’s curfew.

Petes' GMJeff Twohey said it was a minor transgression of team rules, but rules are there for a reason and have to be followed.
"Whether it's a minor or a major transgression you're accountable for your actions and as the captain you are held to a higher standard," said Twohey.
He said Kassian did nothing illegal nor was there an incident that drew the team's attention to the matter. It was simply a case of missing curfew.
"The message should be pretty clear," Twohey said. "No one is bigger than the team."
Twohey said he and coach Ken McRae agreed on the discipline and also informed the Buffalo Sabres, who own Kassian's NHL rights, of their actions and the reason for it.
"This is all part of learning to be a leader," said Twohey. "We hope that this will make Zack a better player and a better captain."

We’ll complete the Saturday/Sunday recaps later this afternoon.

12/11 Recap: Tropp sparks Spartan rally

Corey Tropp continued his pre-Christmas cruise on Friday, scoring the game-tying goal then starting the play on the overtime winner as Michigan State rallied past Bowling Green, 3-2.

Trailing 2-0 entering the third period, the visiting Spartans forced the extra session when Tropp buried a rebound through the legs of Nick Eno at 14:20. The late equalizer was Tropp's second in as many games, with the OT helper giving him eight multi-point games this season. Eno made 21 saves in the Falcons net to move to 2-9-1 on the year.

In a WCHA battle, Brad Eidsness was pulled for the first time in his career after allowing three goals in 23:48 of work as North Dakota played to a 3-3 tie with Wisconsin. Corey Fienhage was -1 after getting back late on the third Badger goal.

Per the game highlights below, Eidsness would certainly like the last goal back. Fienhage (4) is seen sliding to prevent the shot after losing control of the puck in the neutral zone, but otherwise played well on the Sioux blueline.

Elsewhere, Justin Jokinen was even with two shots on goal as Minnesota State defeated Bemidji State, 5-1. The sophomore's offensive tools were briefly shown while skating on the fourth line, and it's easy to think that consistent two-way hustle can keep him in the Maverick lineup. To date, coach Troy Jutting has used the spare forwards to keep the group honest. Jokinen has been a scratch five times as a result.

Connor Knapp took his regular Friday post on the Miami bench as the #1 RedHawks posted their third consecutive shutout with a 6-0 thrashing of Ohio State. Knapp will look to extend the blanking of the opposition when he mans the Miami crease on Saturday.

In QMJHL action, Jordon Southorn finished -2 as PEI lost to Saint John, 4-1. The Sea Dogs continue their QMJHL domination by collecting their 21st straight victory - the third longest streak in league history.

Jacob Lagacé and Maxime Legault were both held without points as Chicoutimi won a 3-2 shootout over Shawinigan. Lagacé has now gone three games without a point for the first time since February of 2008.

In the WHL, Brayden McNabb was -1 with a high sticking minor in Kootenay's 3-1 loss to Calgary.

Mark Adams remained out with a separated shoulder as Chicago lost to Sioux City, 3-2.

An OHL match-up between Nick Crawford's Barrie Colts and Marcus Foligno's Sudbury Wolves was postponed due to poor travel conditions.

12/10 Recap: Adam leaves mark with national team in mind

Does anyone think Luke Adam is ready for Team Canada's Selection Camp?

Playing in his final game Thursday before departing for a world junior tryout in Saskatchewan, the Cape Breton forward scored four times in the Screaming Eagles 7-5 win over Victoriaville. Adam's +4 output vaults him into the QMJHL goal scoring lead with an even 25, and second overall in total points with 52 in 32 games.

Starting on Saturday, Adam will join 35 other players, including 15 from last January's gold medal winners, for the rights to wear the Canadian maple leaf in the World Junior Championships. A bubble player heading into the 2009 schedule, SabresProspects has Adam in strong contention for a role on the fourth line pending a good showing in the camp scrimmages. He's not the quickest skater, but his timely playmaking, use of size, and adequate two-way abilities could make him a hidden gem at either center or wing.

In the OHL, Zack Kassian was -1 as Peterborough edged Niagara, 3-2. The Sabres' first round pick last June, Kassian has eight goals and 23 points in 25 games this season.

12/9 Recap: McNabb pots winner

Brayden McNabb scored the game winning goal and added two assists on Wednesday as Kootenay downed Edmonton, 5-2. The big defender has four goals and five assists in six games since returning from a knee injury.

In the OHL, Nick Crawford finished +1 as Barrie earned a 5-4 overtime win over Owen Sound. The win makes the Colts unbeaten in their last 20 games.

Zack Kassian posted bagels across the stat sheet in Peterborough’s 3-2 shootout win over Belleville. The blanking snaps Kassian’s three-game point streak.

In the QMJHL, Jacob Lagacé was +1 with six shots on goal as Chicoutimi lost to Montreal, 3-2. The 5’11 forward went pointless in two straight games for the first time all season after seeing his 11-game point streak come to an end last week.

In a mid-week college tilt, Alex Biega was even in Harvard's 3-2 loss to Boston College. The loss drops the Crimson to a meager 1-8-2 on the season.

In Tuesday Q play, Jordon Southorn was -1 in PEI’s 3-0 shutout loss to Moncton.

12/6 Recap: Lagacé cools off

Jacob Lagacé saw his 11-game point streak snapped on Sunday as Chicoutimi was blanked by Victoriaville, 3-0. The streak, which began on November 1st in Lagacé's first game back from a head injury, saw the forward accumulate 24 points (12+12) to vault into the top-five of the QMJHL scoring race.

Also from the QMJHL, Luke Adam scored his 21st goal of the year in Cape Breton's 5-4 loss to division rival Moncton. Adam, who finished the game a season-low -3, earned his first major penalty of the season after taking on 6'0, 175-pound Ted Stephens late in the opening period.

Maxime Legault notched a pair of second period assists as Shawinigan scored four unanswered goals to beat Drummondville, 6-4.

In the OHL, Marcus Foligno was +2 as Sudbury downed Brampton, 3-1. Former Buffalo Jr. Sabre and 2010 eligible Phil Lane (Rochester, NY) scored his 7th goal of the season for the Battalion.

In Hockey East, Drew MacKenzie earned an assist as Vermont dropped a home-ice decision to New Hammpshire, 5-2. The sophomore blueliner was on the ice for three of the five goals against.
